So, what is it? We all want something. But, it’s none of my business what you want. I’m just here to help you get it. It’s no secret that most of us struggle with procrastination our entire lives. But, you don’t need to be one of them. Read on.
What You Do
As humans, we often do what we want to do. But that isn’t new. Afterall, who wouldn’t want that? It brings, perhaps, the greatest feeling in the world. But, there’s a problem.
If you want something, you have to take actions that will get you there. And some of those actions are going to be things you don’t like. Think of it this way.
The majority of the population would love to have a healthy body composition – to be thin and in shape. But, modern culture has taught us to hate exercise and healthy foods. I’m going to tell you something you already know.
People don’t enjoy doing things they hate. So, its easy to see why so many people struggle with this. They might know the recipe for getting in shape, but they aren’t following it. ( one medium-sized person, two bags potato chips, one sofa doesn’t equal being thin ) But, try this.
A person can teach themselves to love or hate anything. So, why not learn to love the things that lead to what you want? Don’t you tend to just do what you love – without a struggle? To learn how to do this… simply – keep reading…
What separates what we love from what we hate? Well, a lot of things. But one of them is pretty easy to change. Try this experiment.
Pick an object in the room. Now, stare at it. As you do, say to that object in your head. Say “I Hate You” twenty times.
Did that? Great! Welcome back.
How do you feel? If you did the experiment you’ll see how that doesn’t make you feel very good. Now, what if you thought that about doing a certain task? Wouldn’t doing that task make you not feel so good as well? For example, if you start your day with:
“I hate my job” Don’t be surprised if you don’t want to go. On the other hand, if you said:
“I’m glad that I can go to work. It brings me money that supports my family.” How would you feel about it? Be careful. Many will write this off as “hocus pocus.” But doing that would be a big mistake.
(Think you can figure it out without doing the experiment? Well, you’re right. But you will get only 10% of the benefits. Go back and do it for real. You’ll be glad you did)
Keep this in mind as you go through your day. Whenever you have a negative thought about what you are doing, choose to think of it differently. But, keep in mind.
The idea isn’t to be positive and ignore reality. It’s to teach yourself to enjoy doing what you must do – while staring reality right in the face. Choose to always see how doing so it to your advantage. And never forget that you must…
Get Started – Don’t Second Guess It
The hardest part? Getting started. ( especially in the morning ) I know I’m guilty of it. But, I’ve figured out how to overcome it. And you can do it too.
Just get moving. Don’t allow your mind to interject. Don’t let it complain. Just shut down the second guessing and get going. Once you run the first half mile, it’s easy to keep going.
Learn to love doing what you must and watch procrastination melt away.
